RETROFEED SECTOR SOLUTIONS – Workshop Series

As a part of its knowledge sharing objectives RETROFEED project, together with its consortium partners, put together a workshop series in which each session will be dedicated to one of the project’s sectors solutions. RETROFEED main objective is to enable the use of an increasingly variable, bio-based and circular feedstock in process industries through the retrofitting of core equipment and the implementation of an advanced monitoring and control system and providing support to the plant operators by means of a DSS – Decision Support System – covering the production chain.

This approach is being demonstrated in five resource and energy intensive sectors (ceramic, cement, aluminium, steel, and agrochemical)

Modernising the Steel Industry: A step forward for digitalisation in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF)

Companies in the steel sector are Resource and Energy Intensive Industries mainly due to the use of Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) to melt the steel scrap. This EAF has a very high energy consumption, which translates into a high environmental footprint. The first workshop of the series brought together experts from the demo-sites where the RETROFEED solutions are taking place, namely from PITTINI Group, Tenaris Silcotub, and OPTIT.

Around 40 participants had the chance to discover the solutions developed in the two steel factories to reduce their energy consumption, as well as the Decision Support System (DSS) especially designed for them to help understand how some variables are influencing the process without having to perform extensive tests or complicated procedures.
